About NTSE

National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a national level scholarship scheme for class X students in India. The scholarship amounts for various stages of education are:

  • Scholarship of Rs. 1250/- per month for class XI and XII
  • Scholarship of Rs. 2000/- per month for UG and PG
  • Scholarship for students pursuing PhD as per UGC norms
The examination comprises of two-stage selection process. While the respective state/UT conducts the first stage of NTSE, the second stage is conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The states and UTs have the authority to specify their own norms for determining the eligibility of the candidates. This examination is mainly used to recommend a given number of candidates for the second level of NTSE to be conducted by the NCERT at the national level.

As of today, 2000 scholarships are awarded countrywide with reservation of 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST and 27% for OBC and 4% for group of students with benchmark disabilities.

1- NTSE Stage 1

NTSE stage 1 or State level examination of NTSE has two parts, namely Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The paper pattern of NTSE stage 1 is as discussed below:

2- NTSE Stage 2

1- NTSE Stage 1

  1. All students studying in Class X in a recognised school including Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya, and Sainik School etc. are eligible to appear for NTSE stage 1 in the state where school is located. There is no domicile restriction but the state has the authority to impose any other eligibility condition.
  2. Students registered under Open and Distance Learning (ODL) are also eligible provided they are below the age of 18 years, not employed and appearing in class X for the first time.

2- NTSE Stage 2

All the students of Indian nationality whether studying in India or abroad at Class X level are eligible for NTSE. Only the candidates selected by the States/UTs after NTSE stage 1 are eligible to appear in stage 2.

There is no prescribed syllabus for NTSE. However, the standard of questions must be similar to that of classes IX and X. The comprehensive tentative syllabus of the examination is provided below:
