Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), a national programme of fellowship in Basic Sciences was started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The aim is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students studying Basic Sciences to take up a career in research.
The Department of Science and Technology has given the responsibility of organising and conducting the KVPY programme to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. A separate committee and National Advisory Committee (NAC) have also been set up for overseeing the implementation of the programme.
KVPY assists the students in realising their potential and ensuring that the grooming of best talent for research and development in Science is done in the country. Selections are made from the students studying in class XI/B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in subjects Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having aptitude for scientific research. KVPY provides fellowship and contingency grants to the selected students up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. It also organises summer camps for the selected students in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.
KVPY programme has the following three streams:
- SA -for students in class XI
- SX -for students in class XI
- SB-for students studying Science in the first year of graduation
