About KVPY

Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), a national programme of fellowship in Basic Sciences was started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The aim is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students studying Basic Sciences to take up a career in research.

The Department of Science and Technology has given the responsibility of organising and conducting the KVPY programme to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. A separate committee and National Advisory Committee (NAC) have also been set up for overseeing the implementation of the programme.

KVPY assists the students in realising their potential and ensuring that the grooming of best talent for research and development in Science is done in the country. Selections are made from the students studying in class XI/B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in subjects Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having aptitude for scientific research. KVPY provides fellowship and contingency grants to the selected students up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. It also organises summer camps for the selected students in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

KVPY programme has the following three streams:

  1. SA -for students in class XI
  2. SX -for students in class XI
  3. SB-for students studying Science in the first year of graduation

KVPY is conducted online. The question paper, for any of the three streams, has 2 parts with 4 sections each namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. It means that KVPY whether for SA, SX or SB, has questions from 4 sections – Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. The paper pattern for different streams is explained below:

Stream SA

SectionsNumber of QuestionsTotal MarksDurationMarking Scheme
Part APart B
Physics155253 hoursPart A – 1 mark for correct answer and 0.25 for incorrect answer

Part B – 2 marks for correct answer and 0.5 for incorrect answer

Chemistry15525

Biology15525

Stream SX & SB

SectionsNumber of QuestionsTotal MarksDurationMarking Scheme
Part APart B

Part B – 2 marks for correct answer and 0.5 for incorrect answer

It is compulsory to attempt all the questions in Stream SA whereas there is an option to attempt any three sections in Part A & any two sections in Part B in Stream SB and SX.

For Stream SA:

  1. Students enrolled in class XI (Science) and having secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in class X.
  2. The candidates have to join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences after having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in the class XII board examination.

For Stream SX:

  1. Students enrolled in class XII and aspiring to join undergraduate programme in Basic Sciences provided they have secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects class X.
  2. The candidates have to join an undergraduate course in Basic sciences after having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in class XII.

For Stream SB:

  1. Students enrolled in the 1st year of an undergraduate programme in Basic Sciences and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in class XII.
  2. In the final examination of 1st year, they must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

There is no prescribed syllabus for the aptitude test of KVPY. The test basically aims to test the analytical ability of the student than his/her factual knowledge. However, the test is conducted for syllabus up to class X/XII/1st year of an undergraduate Science programme as applicable.
