About JEE Main

JEE Main is conducted for admissions in undergraduate engineering programmes at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), engineering colleges designated as “Centrally Funded Technical Institutes” (CFTIs) and institutions funded by participating State governments.

JEE Main is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA), an independent autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organisation which has been established by The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India (GOI) under Society Registration Act 1860. NTA aims to conduct efficient, transparent and international standards tests in order to assess the competency of candidates for admissions to premier higher education institutions.

JEE Main is conducted twice in a year, tentatively in the months of January and April. A student can appear in JEE Main twice in an academic session for 3 consecutive years. In case a candidate appears in JEE Main twice a year, the better of the two scores will be considered.

JEE Main has two papers – Paper I and Paper II. Paper I is for candidates seeking admission to B.Tech programme and Paper II is for candidates seeking admission to B. Arch programme. Candidates may take Paper I or Paper II or both as per the course(s) they are seeking admission to. JEE Main Paper I is held in online mode while Paper II is held partly online and partly offline.

Subject combinations for each paper, type of questions in each paper and mode of examination is given in the table below:

PaperSectionsQuestion TypeMode of Examination
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)Mathematics, Physics and ChemistryObjective type i.e. multiple choice questionsOnline
Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning)Mathematics, Aptitude Test and Drawing TestObjective type except drawing test which is subjective in natureOnline except drawing test which is held in pen & paper mode

To be eligible for JEE Main examination, the candidates must have passed class XII examination in any of the two years preceding the year of exam or currently appearing for it. In addition to this, the candidates should also fulfill the age limit requirements of the institutes in which they are desirous of taking admission.

There is no age limit for appearing in JEE Main exam. The candidates who have passed XII class examinations or currently appearing for it are eligible for taking JEE Main.

A diploma holder can apply in JEE Main to appear in JEE Advanced but his/her rank and score for JEE Main will not be declared as diploma holders are not eligible to apply for admission to NITs and CFTIs through JEE Main channel.
