The word percentage is derived from the Latin term “Pro centrum” which means “hundred” or “by hundred.” In Ancient Rome, the mathematical computation was used to be expressed in fractions of 100. This concept was later evolved into percentages. Percentage is an important mathematical concept as it is applied in our daily lives. The topic related to ‘calculate percentage’ is being taught in the class 7 and 8 syllabus.
What is the Meaning of Percentage?
Percentage means a ratio or a number expressed in fractions of 100. It is denoted as the part of a total i.e. 100. It is symbolised using the sign “%”. The abbreviation of percentage is “pct” or “pc”. A percentage is a dimensionless number which has zero unit of measurement.
The concept of percentage helps measure the tendency of a value in respect to its original value. The concept of percentage is hugely applied in businesses while computing profit and loss percentage. Also, in schools and colleges, the marks obtained by students are estimated using the percentage formula.
Percentage Calculation Formula
In order to calculate percentage, we must know its formula. The formula to calculate percentage is ratio of the actual value to the total value and then it is further multiplied by 100.
So, the percentage formula comes up as given below:
Percentage, % = (Value × 100) / Total Value
Let’s understand how to calculate percentage with the help of an example given below:
Question: Suppose there are 7 students who attained distinction in their 10th board exam. So, what would be the percentage of students who attained distinction in their 10th board exam?
Solution: Total number of students in 10th class = 10
Total number of students who attained distinction in their 10th board exam = 7
We know that,
Percentage % = (Value x 100)/ Total Value
= (7/10) x 100 = 70%
What is a Percentage Change Formula?
% change = (New value – original value) x 100/Original Value
So, there are TWO kinds of percentage change. One is percentage increase and another is percentage decrease.
When the new value is more than the original value, then the percentage showcases the percent increase in the original number. It is calculated as:
Percent Increase Formula
(% Increase) = (Increase in Value/Original Value) x 100
Where increase in value is calculated below:
Increase in Value = New Value – Original Value
Ø PERCENTAGE DECREASE
When the new value is lesser than the original value, then the percentage showcases the percent decrease in the original number. It is calculated as:
Percent Decrease Formula
(% Decrease) = (Decrease in Value/Original Value) x 100
Where decrease in value is calculated below:
Decrease in Value = Original Value – New Value
How to Calculate Percentage of a Number?
The numbers can get converted into percentage in the forms given below:
- Fraction form: If the number is given in a fractional format, then first of all convert it into decimal value. This can be done by dividing the top value from the total value and then multiply it with 100.
- Decimal form: If the number is given in a decimal format, then percentage can be easily obtained. Simply, multiply the given number by 100. For example, the given number is 0.65. It can be converted into percentage as given below:
0.65 * 100 = 65%.
How to calculate Percentage of Marks
Consider the marks obtained in the examination and then divide it by the total marks obtained in the examination and then multiply it with 100.
For example: Suppose a boy scored 85 marks out of 100 marks, then what would be its percentage?
Ans. Percentage of marks = (85/100) x100
0.85 x 100 = 85
Therefore, the percentage of marks obtained is 85%.
Ø Difference Between Percentage and Percentile
Both percentage and percentile are different. Let’s understand this difference as given below:
|A percentage represents number out of 100.||Percentile is not a number out of 100.|
|It can be written in the form of both of ratios and proportions.||It cannot be written in the form of ratios or proportions.|
|The ratio of two numbers is multiplied with 100||It is a percentage of value that can be found below a specific value.|
|It is not based upon ranking numbers.||It is based upon ranking numbers.|
|It is denoted in the form of x%.||It is denoted in the form of xth.|
Frequently Asked Questions About Calculate Percentage
Q1. What is the significance of a percentage?
Ans: A percentage helps us compare quantities of different values.
Q2. Is percentage same as a fraction?
Ans. No, percentage is different from the fraction. However when the fraction is multiplied with 100, a percentage comes up.
For example: When the fraction 10/50 is multiplied with 100. A percentage figure comes up as 20%.
Q3. What is the unit of percentage?
Ans. It has no unit. It’s a dimensionless number.
Q4. Is the calculation of percentage holds importance in our daily life?
Ans. Yes, it is important for everyday calculation for calculating increment part of salary, bank interest, discount on products etc.
